- The Denver Mint struck 6.2 million cents in 1933, although few contemporary Americans would have been familiar with these coins. A Depression era issue, the economic conditions of the time kept most 1933-D cents from entering circulation. Instead, the coins were stockpiled by the Treasury Department in anticipation of better times. When the economy began to recover in the late 1930s the Treasury made these coins available, but instead of going into circulation many were acquired by dealers and other numismatists who saw opportunities for profit due to the relatively limited mintage. Yet even though this issue has been plentiful in Mint State since that time, it remains a surprise condition rarity in the full Red Superb Gem preservation offered here.
