- 1809/8 Capped Bust Left Half Eagle. Miller-108, HBCC-3116, BD-1, the only known dies. MS-64+ (PCGS). 1866-S Liberty Half Eagle. No Motto. EF-45 (NGC). This is the only die marriage known to exist for the 1809 dated half eagle delivery, and it is traditionally classified as an 1809/8 overdate. Recently, however, some numismatic researchers (John Dannreuther, for example), have called into question the validity of the overdate status of this issue and suggest that what is under the digit 9 in the date could actually be the remnants of another 9. The reverse die of this issue is the same that the Mint used to strike 1808 half eagles of the BD-4 Wide 5D variety.
Mint records indicate that 33,875 half eagles were struck during calendar year 1809. Some of those coins may be attributable to 1808 dated dies, and the original mintage of the 1809/8 as an issue could be as few as 20,000 pieces (per John Dannreuther, Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties: A Study of Die States, 1795-1834, 2006). This premium quality near-Gem numbers among the finest known survivors, the surfaces uncommonly smooth and free of even trivial distractions. There is actually not much precluding a full Gem rating here, as the strike is sharp and the color is a pretty orange-gold shade. Softly frosted luster is also quite vibrant, although it could perhaps be a bit more so on the obverse. Premium quality in all regards, and a thoroughly delightful coin to behold.
