- 41.3 mm. 541.7 grains. Plain edge. An important Damascened example of this scarce medal, produced by delicately covering design elements in gold leaf to create a remarkable contrast. The design elements and legends remain bright gold in color, while the fields are a somewhat mottled ruddy brown, still showing traces of the lacquer than was applied to keep the gold leaf intact. This was the only Damascened medal in the legendary LaRiviere Collection, sold by our firm in 2001. Any medal showing this process, first pioneered in the late 17th century, is rare. Betts-145 is a rarity on its own; the last one we sold was in the August 2023 Syd Martin sale, selling for $4,800. This is a unique and dramatic way to represent an original Louisbourg Founded medal in an advanced cabinet.
