- Fully struck and semi-reflective in finish with particularly vivid and varied toning on the obverse. The mintage figures for the Proof 1862 silver three-cent piece dropped almost by half from the previous year. Mint Director James Pollock decided to stop producing 1,000 Proof sets at the outset before orders from collectors appeared. According to the records, 550 Proof sets were produced, of which 430 sets were sold initially and a handful sold later on. Any unsold coins were either destroyed through melting or, more likely, disposed of by being released into circulation. The Proof trimes that were produced in 1862 were of very high quality and a number of premium Gem specimens are known. However, most are found in numeric grades of Proof-65 and lower, confirming the fleeting nature of this offering.
