- A monumental specimen for the most advanced collector as so few Flowing Hair silver dollars are truly Mint State today, especially at the Choice level. The strike is sharp on Liberty's hair curls with full separation on the seldom seen waves above her ear, as well as on many of the eagle's tiny breast feathers which show details seldom seen as most are worn away after the briefest time spent in circulation. The Three Leaves reverse refers to the number of leaves in the branch below the eagle's wings, some dies have two, others have three as seen here. There are neither distracting adjustment marks nor grade-limiting abrasions on either side. Beautifully toned, the obverse exhibits a halo of peripheral olive-gold and russet iridescence around a silver-apricot center, while the reverse is awash in an array of vivid olive-gray, brick-red and power blue colors. Both the technical quality and eye appeal are extraordinary. BB Die State III.<p>While first introduced in 1794, it was not until 1795 that the silver dollar was produced in numbers that would allow it to fulfill its intended role as the monetary unit of the fledgling nation. At least 10 obverse dies and 11 reverse dies were prepared for the 1795 Flowing Hair dollar, resulting in 19 known varieties. The BB-27 variety is the most available of these and may be distinguished by three leaves under each of the eagle's wings and a "bar" that extends from the topmost curl of Liberty's hair to star 5. Because Liberty's portrait was deeply impressed into the die, this variety was struck in high relief and many details wore down quickly. An estimated 2,500 and 3,500 pieces are believed to exist for the BB-27 die pair, but as with many of the early silver dollars, almost all are at the low to middle circulated grade levels. The offered coin is a newcomer to the census published in the Winter 2023 revision to Stephen J. Herrman's AMBPR for early silver dollars, in which it would be tied for CC#3 for the 1795 BB-27 variety. It is a stellar example for the connoisseur, and worthy of the strongest bids.
