- C-2, B-2. Listed as R-3 in Breen, which is the second scarcest of the date. The 1793 is a one year only type coin, and the only year with Liberty's bust facing left. Historic as one of the first federally issued coins struck within the walls of the first federal mint in Philadelphia. We love the look of this moderately worn 1793 half cent. We wish they all looked like this. Generally smooth, hard copper surfaces show little, if any of the porosity that is often encountered on the earliest of federal coppers. Deeper brown seen in the fields contrasts with the softer auburn brown color on the devices. Both sides show bold definition despite the wear from generally problem free circulation. A total of 35,334 half cents were struck in the first year of operations at the mint. While the April 12, 1792 Act of Congress authorized coins in copper, silver and gold, it was not until late in 1794 that the mint officials were able to post the surety bonds required to strike coins in precious metals. Two obverse and three reverse dies were engraved sometime between April and July 1793 and by September 18, all were delivered. In 1794, the design was modified to show Liberty facing right, making the first year a single year only issue. PCGS 33, NGC 9, CAC 4. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $15,500, and there has not been a CAC approved example sold since the 2010 ANA auction, where one sold for $14,950. This lovely example is worthy of a fine early copper collection or carefully chosen type set. A popular collector grade coin like this will see strong bidding for sure! Cert. Number 5184516 PCGS # 1000.00
