- A borderline Mint State Territorial gold coin. Bold, satiny luster shines under rich golden-orange-rose patina. Well struck, with nearly full definition on the central obverse. To the naked eye only a few tiny ticks can be located, none of which are distracting, and even with the aid of a strong glass there are no noticeable marks that warrant mention. The eye appeal is spectacular for an example of this type. Kagin notes that 2.5 million were struck between March and October 1853, making this a great type coin for someone who wants to own a true piece of territiorial gold from the famed California Gold Rush, struck at what would become the San Francisco Mint the following year. The coins struck in prior years were minted while the U.S.A.O.G was under the operation of Humbert and Moffat (both of whom issued their own privately minted coins), but after their retirement, Curtis, Perry, and Ward took over the operation. A very historic and interesting type coin. PCGS 21, NGC 35. Do not let the population figures fool you, in the last 7 years, only 3 NGC coins and a single PCGS coin have sold in auction; the most recent realizing $10, 281 in the 2017 ANA auction. That coin did not have the great eye appeal as this coin, showing a number of more serious marks, flatter strike, and much less luster. This coin should see significant bidding activity. Cert. Number 3221753006 PCGS # 10013
