- High Condition Census quality for this scarcer die pairing of the 1825 dime. The obverse has vivid lilac-russet iridescence at the right with a lighter champagne-gold shade at left. The reverse is mostly reflective with some lilac-russet at the bottom right. The strike is very bold and gives this wonderful Gem exquisite eye appeal. Struck from an early state of this die pairing without a crack on the reverse that developed in the JR-3 marriage. Examples of the 1825 JR-1 attribution with the crack represent the earliest remarriage in the Capped Bust dime series.<p>Scarce in all grades, the 1825 JR-1 is a rarity in Mint State. The JR book indicates "very few are in EF-45 or better grades." The data collected for the 2009 Horning census supports this, counting 14 discrete specimens in major variety collections of dimes, of which six were better than Very Fine. Only one was in Mint State, the JR plate coin. This example clearly ranks among the finest known, a distinction is shares with the D. Brent Pogue specimen in PCGS MS-65 that realized $15,275 in our February 2016 Pogue III sale.
