- 1854-C Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter-2. Weak C. EF-45 (PCGS). CAC.
A handsome half eagle with deep olive undertones to dominant deep orange-honey color. Softness of strike in the centers is characteristic of the issue, the remaining areas generally bold with just light wear. Pleasingly smooth with considerable frosty luster remaining. An underrated issue, the 1854-C is one of the scarcer Charlotte Mint half eagles from the 1850s. Winter-2, offered here, is the variety sometimes certified as a Weak C, with the mintmark faint and lightly entered into the reverse die by Mint personnel. On the present example the upper curve of the C is the portion of the letter that is most readily discernible when viewed with a loupe. This attractively original Choice Extremely Fine coin offers superior quality, eye appeal, and rare CAC approval for a variety that is typically offered well circulated, if not also impaired.
Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection - Rhone Set.
CAC Stickered Population: 5 in all grades (AU-50 highest graded).
PCGS# 98257. NGC ID: 25UJ.
