- 1848 Braided Hair Half Cent. First Restrike. B-2. Rarity-5. Small Berries. Proof-64 BN (PCGS).
A gorgeous and original specimen toned in a blend of olive-gold, sea-green and caramel patina. Lightly reflective in the fields and entirely free of distractions beneath a glass. The devices are satiny and undisturbed, even if somewhat soft at the centers. Readily identified by an area of bright orange toning above Liberty's head as well as a horizontal lint-mark on her cheek
In the world of copper American coins, the Proof-only half cents of 1840-1848 are among the most challenging of all disciplines. The quantities struck of "original" pieces as well as the later "restrikes" were tiny at best, probably with just several dozen pieces made of most dates, along with an untold quantity of "restrikes" that were concocted at later dates, perhaps as late as 1858 or even later. The population among this date range is thin at best, and many collectors rely on the occasional auction appearance perhaps as much as any venue to obtain pleasing Proofs of the era. The presently offered near-Gem Proof will make a splendid addition to any half cent collection currently being formed.
