- 1866 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. EF-40 (PCGS).
This is an uncommonly lustrous coin for both the issue and the assigned grade, the 1866 quarter eagle scarce to rare in all grades and seldom offered in today's market. Overall boldly defined, especially on the obverse, and sure to see spirited bidding among advanced gold collectors. Circulation strike quarter eagle production at the Philadelphia Mint remained limited in 1866 as gold specie payments had not yet resumed despite the cessation of hostilities in the Civil War the year before. Only 3,080 coins were struck.
Provenance: From the Maurice Snow Collection. Acquired from Harry J. Forman, date not recorded. Earlier from Kreisberg & Cohen's Windsor Collection sale, November 1981, lot 338.
PCGS Population: 7; 26 finer, just two of which are Mint State (MS-65 finest).
PCGS# 7803. NGC ID: 25K7.
