- <strong>Obv:</strong> Liberty head faces left with the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM above and the date 1878 below. Thirteen stars are arranged at the border seven left, six right. Liberty is wearing a cap ornamented with ears of wheat, cotton leaves and bolls, and the cap is inscribed with the word LIBERTY. <strong>Rev:</strong> A circle of 38 stars encloses the inscription GOLOID / 1 - G. / 24 - S. / .9 FINE. / 258 GRS. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is inscribed along the upper border and the denomination ONE DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower border. Richly toned in mahogany-brown with blushes of rose, olive-gold and lilac-blue flashing into view as the surfaces rotate under a light. The design of this pattern type is attributed to Chief Engraver William Barber, and only about nine or 10 specimens are believed extant in copper (per the website <em>uspatterns.com</em>).
