- Mint State 1807 Bust Half Dollar
50/20 Variety
1807 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-112. Rarity-1. Large Stars, 50/20. MS-62 (PCGS).
Satiny luster blankets each side of this Mint State example, illuminating the patina of violet, sapphire, and gold hues. A minor mark at Liberty's chin and a faint pinscratch in the left obverse field are the only notable abrasions, though these go largely unnoticed without magnification. The dies show considerable fatigue in the peripheries, with heavy flowlines and the stars and the legends pulling to the rim. Even so, the central elements remain nicely defined. An attractive example with strong eye appeal for the assigned grade. Always in demand among early half dollar variety collectors, the 1807 50/20 is not only an obvious die preparation blunder that is evident to the naked eye, but it also enjoys its own listing in the popular Guide Bookreference on United States coins. Two die marriages are known for this variety, employing the same reverse but different obverses. Overton-112 is by far the more common in terms of total number of coins extant, although in Mint State it is, like all early Capped Bust half dollars, scarce and eagerly sought.
